Last week on the Today Show Head Thirsty Girl, Leslie Sbrocco and Executive Wine Editor at Food & Wine Magazine, Ray Isle, battled WINE in their legendary showdown, “He-Said, She- Said” for the best summer wines. Categories included bubbles, rose, chilled reds, and boxed wines. Who do you think won? Hint: TG!

Bubbles

Leslie: Ooh La La Sparkling Pinot Grigio, Under $10. Fruit forward and crisp, low alcohol and perfect for summer sipping.
Ray: Moscato d’Asti Cascinetta 2012, ~$12. Sweet and sparkling with a light sweet finish of apricots and peaches. Pairs well with spicy foods or as an aperitif.

Rose

Leslie: 2012 Beckman Grenache Rose, Santa Ynez, $16. Well balanced with flavors or cherry, cranberry and licorice.
Ray:
Muga Rosado 2011, Under $10. Garnacha blend, ripe fruits with a tart and clearly defined finish. Ideal with outdoors grilling, stands up to meats and salads.

Chilled Reds

Leslie: Slices Red Wine Sangria, Under $10. Sangria fans rejoice, all the fruit flavor without the work and half the cost. Chill and serve at summer parties.
Ray: Palacios Remondo Rioja Vendimia 2011, $17. Fruit forward, wonderful aromas, ideal for grilled meats and summer sipping.

Box Wine

Leslie: Bota Box 2011 Redvolution, 3 L ~ $20. Box wine is evolving and 4 bottles in 1 package always sounds like a good idea to me. Lush dark fruit taste of berries and plum. Pairs well with grilled red meats.
Ray: Powers Cabernet Sauvignon 2010, $15. Dark berry fruits, deep rich mouthfeel.
